Iâve come to believe that the way we communicate leads to the way we think (not the other way around). More importantly, this impacts our judgment and the choices we make. In my studies, Iâve yet to find a definition for CQ that I think encapsulates its true meaning. That has prompted me to develop my own: Communication Intelligenceâ"An individualâs level of proficiency in accurately exchanging thoughts using verbal and nonverbal cues to achieve a mutual understanding. If you canât remember my entire definition, simply stash the last two words. A mutual understanding seems to be difficult enough in life and almost impossible in a time-compressed job interview. There are many steps you can take to improve your CQ, but three in particular will go a long way. Before we discuss those, you need to recognize something. Good communication leads to good judgment. This holds true because when you have accurate information and a mutual understanding, you are at a minimum making an informed decision. As I considered how to package this message, I often thought of a funny saying. Good judgment comes from experience. Unfortunately, experience comes from a lot of bad judgment. I always laugh at that expression solely because itâs entertaining. Of course, it simply isnât true. Thereâs no law that says you have to exercise bad judgment to gain experience. Furthermore, I have several hundred cases Iâve personally handled that illustrate individuals with experience donât necessarily exercise good judgment. This tends to occur for the same reason history repeats itselfâ"because people donât listen the first time. In the case of exercising poor judgment, itâs because people donât listen to themselves. In my opinion, people that exercise the best judgment and make the smartest decisions are not necessarily the ones with the most experience or good intuition. They are typically the ones who are the most introspective and actually listen to themselves. They also rarely have unexpressed or misunderstood expectationsâ"the very same expectations that shape what we see and hear, but more disturbingly what we value. Realize, of course, that itâs extremely difficult to listen to yourself. Your head is filled with biases you canât rid, residual emotions from hours or days earlier, all smashed between a crowd of preoccupations from your work and personal life. The second step to improving is maintaining awareness of your expressions while simultaneously practicing curiosity for the other person. Become inquisitive as to why the person did, said, thought, chose, or whatever the appropriate point is. Oftentimes, a simple question regarding, âWhy is that important to you?â or âWhy did you think that was the right choice?â will uncover the mystery. The third, and my favorite, step in improving your CQ is to perform the âintent check.â Just because you said it doesnât mean they understood it. Just because you heard it doesnât mean thatâs what they meant. Remember, communication is complete if and only if the message was properly understood. Otherwise, you technically miscommunicated. The easiest way to ensure good communication is to repackage what the other party said and confirm, preferably in different words, what the other party meant. Donât forget, communication isnât about the words used. Itâs about the message sent and received.

Be truthful: Is it other people who motivate you, or other objective factors, such as hard facts? Even with the downturn in the stock market in recent weeks, job seekers and professionals have reason to be more optimistic about their career prospects. Itâs time to take charge of your career again and ask for what you want. Our clients, although still realistic, are more optimistic and encouraged that they can make a career change, ask for the salary they feel they deserve, and even ask to create a new position in their organization tailored just for them. Here are some thoughts to consider as you think about your next career move and goals Ask for what youâre worth. You can be more aggressive with salary requests than you could 5 years ago. However, make sure you do your research by location and industry to be realistic. Donât over-inflate your request but thereâs no need to be hesitant about asking for the salary you are worth commensurate with the industry and role youâre applying for. Remember, if you arenât looking to make a job change, you can make your current job better. During the recession months, productivity was being pushed to the limit. Employees were doing more but making the same salary. If you have been a hard worker and been productive at the same organization, that gives you leverage to ask your employer for more. Donât be afraid to ask for additional opportunities, or just assume it wonât happen. Donât just sit around and wait for employer to hand benefits to you, whether itâs salary or more responsibility. Take charge of your career, always ask for what you want. We have had 2 clients in the past 2 months do just that. One in Washington state, has been with her company for 13 years and frankly, is bored. She asked her boss twice this year for additional responsibility and nothing happened. She finally went over her bossâs head and went to her bossâs boss, the one who hired her, and made the same request. As of last week, they had created the new position she suggested. *Keep in mind, itâs not always appropriate to go over your bossâ head. These situations can be touchy so, before acting, be sure to get advice from a coach, a mentor or a friend. The other client in Nashville Tennessee, proposed a new department, with him at the helm, for his existing company. They agreed to it. He starts his new job in a few months.
