The Making of Sand Sailors

The Making of Sand SailorsThe Making of Sand SailorsThe crisp staccato of an M-16 rings out, punctuated by the ominous cannonade of several more machine guns and explosions. An Army drill sergeant shouts instructions over the tumult of fighting as armed Sailors dressed in desert camouflage and body armor hit the dirt and prepare to engage the enemy as the serenity of a peaceful spring morning at Fort Jackson, S.C., is transformed into a realisticbattlefield. A doorway is a fatal funnel You never, never stop there Hooah? instructs Alpha Company Task Force Marshall (TFM) Army Staff Sgt. David Lyle, as the dust and smoke clear and silence descends. Hooah Come the echoes of understanding from most Sailors, with a few Aye, Ayes thrown in. The drill sergeant surveys his platoon of trainees who are picking themselves up off the ground and notices someone grimace in mild discomfort. Lyle has seen a lot in his Army career, but never did he think he would be training a platoon of U.S. Navy Sai lors who would, in a matter of days, be transported over to Iraq and Afghanistan to provide his Soldier brothers with some much-needed assistance in the long war against terrorism. Yet here he and his fellow drill sergeants are, leading Sailors onto the firing range, putting them through the paces of convoy operations, drawing in the sand with sticks to illustrate points and moving sequences inside a mock village created for practicing urban combat operations. The soldiers will also pose as hostiles and friendlies to make the training scenarios more realistic. Army First Sgt. Kevin Bramlett, senior enlisted soldier in Alpha Company, is in charge of 18 Army drill instructors of TFM who have been tasked with training the Navys Individual Augmentees (IA). The Sailors will supplement Army troops worldwide as part of a joint-tafelgeschirr operation called U.S. Navy Individual Augmentee Combat Training (USNIACT). Ive benefited from getting to work with another service, Bramlett said. As I ve learned how a different service processes information, Ive had to adjust my training style to get them to understand. Active-duty Sailors and Reservists, ranging in rank from E-3 to O-6, undergo the two-week training at McCrady Training Center on Fort Jackson and then are sent directly to a theater in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, the Horn of Africa (Djibouti) and other dangerous regions in the world. Sailors abandoning the relative safety of their ships to walk around with weapons among improvised explosive devices (IED), ride in convoys and clear buildings of enemy insurgents? When I joined the Navy as a Personnel Specialist, I never imagined I would be here preparing to fight on the ground, but I left my options open, knowing that I had to be ready to do whatever was asked of me, said PS3 Mark Hutchinson, who was going through IA training at Fort Jackson in preparation for deployment to Kuwait. Like many of the Sailors undergoing IA training, Hutchinson was selected by his comman d, but he has always viewed himself as a volunteer by virtue of taking the enlistment oath and wearing a Navy uniform. When they said they needed me, I was prepared to go, he said. Hiking through woods thick with pine needles, crawling through deep sand, sweltering in heat under 66 pounds of clothing and equipment and riding in a convoy that culminates in entering a village made of battered, faded Connex boxes is a drastic change from Hutchinsons previous job at Personnel Support Detachment in Pensacola, Fla., but his attitude personifies what the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) was looking for from Sailors when he said he wanted the Navy to get into the fight. The first four words in the National Security Strategy are America is at War, said RADM Dave Gove, commander, Naval Personnel Development Command (NPDC) and Navy Personnel Command (NPC), who oversees this IA training program. We have to be ready to stab und sttze the combat service support missions that the CNO has pledged to make sure we help cover for the ground forces in country. There are approximately 10,000 Sailors serving in IA billets, split equally between active duty and Reserve components. The majority of IAs receive orders to Central Command in Iraq and Afghanistan. Were obligated to make sure our Sailors who are helping support the ground forces of the Marines and the Army have the correct understanding to be able to deal with their environment and be effective in accomplishing their mission, Gove said. Enter Fort Jackson and its cadre of Army drill instructors. Under the watchful eye of TFM Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Doug Snyder and the commanders of Alpha, Bravo and Charlie Companies, instructors and students alike must in many ways discard what they have been taught since their respective recruit training to effectively train and be trained. The biggest obstacle for Sailors is the shock of being a land-combat Soldier, said Alpha Company Commander Army Capt. Jim Hulgan, who will help de liver roughly 3,700 trained IA trained Sailors to battalion commanders this fiscal year. In somecasesthey pick it up easily, in others they dont. We use some of the Sailors own jargon and try to relate the training to something they are more familiar with. In theArmywe turn civilians into Soldiers, but thats not what were doing here. First, we introduce them to Army tactics and doctrine so they become familiar with how the Army does geschftsleben on the ground and understand what the Soldiers are doing so that they can provide effective help, said Hulgan. Second, they get a sense of confidence that they can actually do the missions they are being sent to do. But the road Sailors have to travel to getthereis not easy. From the moment they hit Fort Jackson, the pace is fast and intense. Sailors arrive with nothing but the shirts on their backs and are immediately indoctrinated into the Army atmosphere. It begins with the uniform issue, either desert camouflage or the Armys new combat uniforms, and Interceptor Body Armor (IBA). The ensemble is then completed by the Rapid Fielding Initiative, which includes the new Advanced Combat Helmet, infantry combat bootsandWiley X Goggles. From that point on, the drill sergeants have the primary goal of putting the IAs into the mindset of a Soldier. The combat training scenarios are designed to teach Sailors critical thinking skills so they are more adept decision makers, especially in high-stress and crisis situations. That means, among other things, getting Sailors familiar, comfortable and as proficient as possible with the various weapons they will use in theater. In addition to providing weapons training, the drill instructors push the Sailors to organize and operate as teams. Basic instruction is given in a variety of combat areas, including patrol techniques, communications, land navigation, first aid, MEDEVAC, cultural awareness and urban assault scenarios. The idea is to ensure that if they are in a combat situation , theyll at least have some of the training to help them react and hopefully keep them alive. Senior Chief Yeoman Larkin Whetstone, leadingchief petty officer of the Navy Liaison Office for the course, said Sailors must never forget that they are only receiving a foundation in combat skills training that will be built upon by further training when they reachtheater. We are teaching initial combat and survival skills, he said. We are not trying to turn Sailors into infantrymen. Maybe not, but an IAs typical training day is nothing to scoff at, either. Youre tired, but its an incredible training experience, said CAPT Marcus Fisk, a Reservistandleader of Class 506. Were up at 5 a.m. and put in 18-hour days sometimes, but the instructors are outstanding and Im having a lot of fun. Whetstone is quick to praise the Army instructors for the life-saving training they are providing, but he also wants his shipmates to understand how appreciative the Soldiers are for the Navys service. We asked the Army to perform this service so we expected to be treated like a customer, but they have treated the Navy like a partner, Whetstone said. The drill instructors are very motivated because they realize what they are here to do, which is to save lives. They know that every time they send a Sailor into theater it means another Soldier gets to take a break. Fisk sees this training as a direct reflection of the increase in joint service operations to meet changing military requirements. I think this training brings with it an awareness and understanding that what we used to do in the Navy is changing, said the surface warfare officer who spent 10 years in Navy Special Operations. When you consider that 85 percent of the worlds population lives within 200 nautical miles of the sea and there are over 900,000 miles of navigable rivers in the world, you see its crucial for the Navy to be involved on the ground as well. I think in the future this type of training is going to become the r ule rather than the exception. The Sailors had no idea how difficult some of these tasks are, such as being an effective stacking team in urban operations, Snyder said. I cannot stress enough how critical Sailor readiness is in this training.Isneed to arrive here ready to train. That means they have all of their medical and dental requirements completed, their paperwork is in order and they are prepared physically, mentally and personally. Taking five or six Sailors with no combat experience and molding them into a functional and coherent team so they can meet their mission objective is a lot to ask in such a short time, Snyder continued. We are teaching them how to crawl, walk and maybe start to jog. Once in theater, they take it to the next level, but they must have something to work from and they will get that here.

Marine Corps Tattoo (Body Art) Policy

Marine studentencorps Tattoo (Body Art) PolicyMarine Corps Tattoo (Body Art) PolicyThe Marine Corps takes a conservative approach to personal appearance, in terms of grooming and uniform standards. Eccentricities in dress or appearance that detract from uniformity and team identity are not permitted. Following this principle, the Marines have detailed guidelines governing what kinds of tattoos are allowed. The Corps fruchtwein recently updated its policy in 2016, and while there were some changes, the basic policy remains the same Tattoos are permitted as long as they can be covered by the standard physical training uniform of green t-shirt and shorts. If they follow these guidelines, Marines can have as many tattoos as they want. Under MCBUL 1020, there are several official ways to measure tattoos to make sure theyre in compliance with Marine Corps rules. There are both elbow-measuring and knee-measuring tools that can be used to make sure the uniform would cover a tattoo (ideally b efore its applied to the skin). Sleeve Tattoos and Brands in the Marines A sleeve tattoo is a very large tattoo, or a collection of smaller tattoos, that covers or almost covers a persons entire obere extremitt or leg. ansicht are prohibited in the Marine Corps.? Half-sleeve or quarter-sleeve tattoos (very large tattoo, or a collection of smaller tattoos that covers, or almost covers the entire portion of an arm or leg above or below the elbow or knee) that are visible to the eye when wearing standard physical training gear (t-shirt and shorts) also are prohibited. In addition, Marines may not have tattoos or brands (any marking that cant be easily removed) on the head or neck, inside the mouth, or on the hands, fingers or wrists. One exception that is allowed a single band tattoo of no more than three-eighths of an inch in width on one finger. Other Types of Tattoos Prohibited by the Marines Tattoos or brands that may be considered prejudicial to good order, discipline and m orale, or are of a nature to bring discredit upon the Marine Corpsare not allowed. These may include but are not limited to, any tattoo that is sexist, racist, vulgar, anti-American, anti-social, gang related, or related to an extremist group. Cosmetic Tattoos in the Marine Corps The Marine Corps allows cosmetic tattooing in certain circumstances. Cosmetic tattooing refers to medical or surgical procedures conducted by licensed medical personnel. For example, an individual may be medically authorized to get a tattoo on scar tissue in order to disguise it or make it less noticeable. Tattoos in Other Branches of the U.S. Military All the other branches of the armed forces have policies governing tattoos. They all tend to be similar to the Marine Corps policy, although the Army loosened its rules somewhat in 2015, to help with recruiting efforts. But all prohibit tattoos that are derogatory in nature or are too large or obtrusive. The goal is to keep Marines and other troops as uniform as possible, right down to their skin.

How to Survive When Your Support System Fails

How to Survive When Your Support System FailsHow to Survive When Your Support System FailsIt takes a village to raise a family. But what happens if you lose this village or perhaps it never even existed? This past New England winter welches very hard for me.I took on new challenging work projects and then I lost most of my helfende hand ordnungsprinzip due to illnesses and being house bound because of the tremendous amount of snow.Oh, and dont forget the snow days and school delays. There were times when I was at my wits endBut I wanted to make things work so badly that I found ways to survive.Heres how I made it through the tough times when my support system failed. There were times when I wallowed in how bad things were. How I survived was focusing on the reality of the situation and having faith.Asking What was the reality in that moment? moved me forward and changed my perspective like I had a job I had to do.It was time to just do it.Everything else could wait. The kids wouldnt suff er from brain damage if they watched Big Hero 6 again.I just needed to focus on what needed to be done in that moment.I had faith that things would work themselves out, which they have. It was difficult to have faith but coping can be about choices.I chose to face reality and have faith. Sometimes Id get so frustrated Id just screamHow I survived was exercising.Venting this way was my saving graceIronically I enjoyed all the shoveling this winter.Must frustration was taken out on breaking ice and throwing snow.Plus the kids couldnt see my tears when I was alone with the snow blower. The fresh cold air was refreshing. Another venting strategy was a new workout DVD purchase.I cant say enough good things about BeachBodys Insanity workouts. My son would ask me why my face looked so wet, haBreaking a sweat helped change my perspective on things. It also just made me happy Since I enjoy writing I keep a journal. When life got really bumpy though Id avoid my journal and opt for surfing Faceboo k.We all know that when youre struggling reading about others happiness and successes may not be helpful. This is when I would realize I had to put the phone down and pick the pencil up. When I felt helpless I searched for happiness in something else. Two of my top values are family and creativity.I combined the two and made a picture collage on a blank wall in my home. Now when I need a pick me up I get to look at my creation and smile. Although sometimes my children are part of my frustration connecting with them gives me strength as well.I would forget to question how they were feeling about everything that was going on.Im sure it was affecting them, too. They are only going to be six, five, and two once in their lives so I would sit and enjoy their company, their laughter, and their hugs and kisses. How I survived was sitting with them and showing them love. All we need is love I am a neat freak, but when I was the only being neat my habit drove me bonkersHow I survived was purging it ems in my home.As the month passes I would have an open empty cardboard box to throw unused items.Once full Id tape them shut and schedule a donation pick up.If I needed motivation to purge Id make the appointment first to help keep me accountable. In the end, the less things I had to be neat about the less bonkers I would feel Sometimes I was the one doing everything.Everywhere I looked at home or work there was something pressing to do.When you have a chaotic mind set everything appears urgent. How I survived was getting organized.I reigned in my weekly priorities with a quadrant to-do list split up into self, people, home management and career projects.I felt focused and accomplished when I used this system. At the beginning of the week Id create the list and at the end I felt accomplished looking at a (somewhat) completed list. Have you ever felt like no one was helping you?How did you support yourself?Leave a comment over on my Facebook page and tell me all about it.

Weird Business Models that Work

Weird Business Models that Work Weird Business Models that Work For the last four and a half years, Ive been hunched over a laptop screen, ferociously tapping keys at the exact rate and accuracy required to have somehow become *probably* the best person-for-hire in my field.Im an Environmental Copywriting Consultant.Never heard of this job title, right? Thats because I made it up to carve out my niche. The anthroponym actually has three very efficient purposesEnvironmental tells you my industry.Copywriting tells you my greatest strength.Consultant shows my evolution from freelancing. So, all in all, you might think therbeies no one with a job weirder than mine. Well. Not exactly.Over the years, Ive honigwein people doing weird-er, wonderful-er, and wackier things to make a living on permanent vacation. Why do their stories matter?Because theres no idea strange enough to pursue. Hesitant if your weird business model will work? Read on and find out how strange an idea can in fact work out just fine.So here we goThe board game guyThats Chris Backe. I start with Chris as he is the exception, in thatI didnt meet him in a bar,I have actually never met him.Perhaps in some Facebook group, our words connected and we forged a minor DN bromance. I forget. What I do know is that Chris has one of the coolest jobs in the world. He designs board games. Sounds like a dream job, doesnt it? For Chris, its a reality, and he even sent me some test versions of his games recently. They are epic. He also reviews board games, of course, because hes something of an expert (warning do bedrngnislage play him at board games, I assume he will destroy you, puny human).Chris recently sold One Weird Globe, one of the best websites on the internet for detailed and useful DN and expat guides to a load of popular cities. He wrote fruchtwein of the guides himself, and theyre brilliant. I assume this experience is what led him to write what I believe to be the best DN bible on the market, Becoming a D igital Nomad. The fetishist whose name I never got and never caredOn a very drunken night, in a dimly lit bar somewhere in Spain, a guy overhears me speaking English and we get chatting.Hes a digital nomad too, he tells me as he explains what it is exactly that he does.I nod, Mhm, I see. Yup, ok and people actually buy them? Dude... thats kinda gross. He was an grenzberschreitend used womens underwear distributor (or, in plain language he sold used panties online to fellow pervs.)I love telling this story, because for me its hilarious. I often add erroneous details, such as a receding hairline ponytail combo, oily skin, hairy fingers or audibly loud breathing, but the truth was, from what I remember, he was just a normal-looking creeper. His fetish for used womens underwear had spiralled out of control, and hed ended up with stock. In an attempt to rid his stock, he obviously found his fellow Panchira and Undergarment Fetishists, and built dialogues with them. He bought a ticket to Japa n. He somehow managed to find dozens of women to whom he would provide a fresh pair of underwear each day, and each day they would sell it after use in a small plastic bag.I dont know what the women got out of it, but he was distributing a few thousand pairs of used Japanese womens underwear each month. The knickers cost him almost nothing, but the customers were paying a good price. He used the income to travel around the world and hang out in bars with norms like me. He haunts my underwear drawer, but I appreciated his earnest. The LinkedIn CreeperI dont remember this womans name, which is a real shame, because her business model was ingenious, very simple, and incredibly profitable. The fact that either I dont remember her name, or the gelegenheit that she never told it to me, only adds to the allure and mystery that surrounded her.To some, she may be considered an international businesswoman of mystery and dealmaking, but to me, she will always be The LinkedIn Creeper. Lets call her TLC, and her special brand of tender love and care, was to ghost-message business targets for high-flying execs and CEOs.She was so charming, like a Bond girl. I could understand immediately how her personality was her business. Pretending to be a dozen different business people, she logged into their accounts, built relationships, put forward ideas, and took cuts on serious business deals. She didnt even have a LinkedIn profile of her own, she didnt need one. She was doing business on behalf of others, and nobody was the wiser. Except me, because she told me everything. Now Ive told you. Sorry TLC, the gigs up.The Chiang Mai workaholicNeither weird, wonderful or wacky, this guy was simply hilarious and pitiable, and he gave me and my fellow DN, long-time friend, and Asia travel-buddy Danny, a few hearty laughs. When based in Chiang Mai for what I feel was a little too long, Danny and I tried to cut living expenses by booking into a hostel that was just 77 baht per night, at the time around 1.70, or $2.We sat on the front porch sipping beers and sweating through our Chang vests when it happened. The words Im a DI-GI-TAL NO-MAD were carried along that sticky humid Thai air right into our ear cavities, and we tried not to chuckle as the booming American male voice continued.YAH, I LIVE HEE-UR. I do SO-CIAL ME-DI-A were his next words, and I not only found humour in the content, but in the fact that he was either shouting his words, or saying them syllable-by-syllable to what I assume was a non-native English captive audience. Its sim-ple. I work six-tee-eight hours PER WEEK, and I get to live hee-ur.The problem was, he wasnt really living, because working 11 hour days from the common areas of the $2 a day hostel next door to ours, and leaching on the free wi-fi, is a pretty poor way to make the most of Chiang Mai. Every time Danny and I rode off on our motorbikes, there he was, doing so-cial me-di-a.At the end of our stay, Danny and I were again on the front p orch of our hostel, drinking Leo, probably (it makes you dance, they say), at about 11 pm, when we heard it. It was the final straw for me.Hey dude, are you still working? Its pretty late, youve been here all day? someone asked him.YAH, Its called O-VER-TIME, ever heard of it?How did he end up in such a ludicrous stelle? From my opinion, he was chasing the tag of digital nomad more than the actual liberties it provides. So heres a bit of advice from me. Dont undervalue your work, dont undervalue your time, and dont undervalue the amount you can gain and learn from closing the laptop as well as opening it. This is a cautionary tale, because Im sure hes not alone in this situation. The Polish earthquake simulatorI was at a DN meetup, about 7 beers down the hatch, and there was a guy stood on his own at the bar. I didnt want him to feel left out, in case it was his first time there, so I walked up to him, and the conversation went like this (now, bare in mind he was Polish and not that c onfident at speaking English).Me Hey, how are you doing?Guy Thinking.Me Oh, I asked how you are doing, not wha-Guy Earthquakes.Me What? Where?Guy In my computer.Me Erm, you mean on the news?Guy No.Me Are you here for the digital nomad meetup? (As opposed to being a random guy who carries earthquakes in his computer.)Guy Yes. I show.*His satchel appears from nowhere, the velcro rips open and his laptop glides out* - it was smooth, I remember thinking it was a very smooth movement, like a golfer with a proud set of new clubs.Guy See.Me Ah EarthquakesThis Polish guy was literally building earthquake simulators for a variety of scientific organisations. I dont even know the level of technical knowledge in science, geology and programming that you need to do that, but it was super cool. He showed me some demonstrations. I think this was the same night I met The LinkedIn Creeper.Ellen and her Courage CamperI havent spoken to her in so long, but when I lived in the digital nomad hub of Tar ifa in the south of Spain, she was one of my favourite people to chat with. Originally from the Netherlands, I believe she was a business coach or consultant who sold everything and moved into a camper van. From there, she set up Courage Camper, a resource and guidance programme to help other people move from a typical house-based routine, into a badass existence on wheelsI dont know how many dreamers Ive met who say something along the lines of Yknow what, one day Im gonna just trade it all in and live in a campervan, and grow my hair long, and surf, and cook on a fire, and watch the sunsets... yeah, Ill do that. They dont do that, but I say to them Speak to Ellen, its not my department, and I direct them to her website. She is arguably one of the coolest DNs Ive ever met, especially as shes older and already had a life and career. I have huge respect to anyone who has the inner strength to pursue this lifestyle, but I admit it was easier for me at 22, with no partner, mortgage, resp onsibilities or dependents.Steph and his droneDear Steph, Im sorry if this is wildly inaccurate, but I have used the example of your DN life, or how I remember your explanation of it to be, as inspiration to help other people become digital nomads too.How I remember the story is something like this, although completely paraphrasedI was working remotely doing some digital marketing roles, not enjoying it that much, just kitesurfing as much as possible and travelling from kite-spot to kite-spot. I bought a drone and was getting pretty good at using it. It was Carnival in Brazil and I was super wasted in a bar in downtown So Paulo. Using the bar to hold myself up, I engaged in a conversation with the guy next to me. He asked what I did, I told him I was a drone pilot and digital marketer. He hired me on the spot, it turned out he was an events manager for some of the worlds biggest festivals. Ever since, Ive been travelling the world, using my drone to make promo footage, and kitesurfi ng, of course. While I cant remember the exact story, these five lessons are pivotal.Networking can happen anywhere, with anyone. If Drone Pilot is a paid remote work job, think what else can be.Use your DN life to follow your passions, not just the money.Dont be afraid to embellish, it can lead to amazing opportunities.Being a DN puts you in random situations, and if you want to be the most random digital nomad that anybody knows, youve gotta make yourself the sort of person who dances through those situations and transforms them into new adventures.I have so many more anecdotesthe Slovakian guy who spent thirty minutes telling me (a British liberal) why he hates British snowflakes, the Irish woman who mercilessly resented every single client she had,the British guy who was making money from YouTube by producing instrumental music, the American girl who was so stressed about her data scientist job that she chain-smoked joints all day long, another British guy that I met by chance on two continents who was making a killing selling shaving equipment, the African guy who was building a software that had no market or profitability, and the German guy who was buying and selling drugs in the Deep Web.The digital nomad world is more raucous, bizarre, random and wonderful than most people expect. We are not all programmers, designers and writers, but most of us are adventurers, pioneers and in need of a good conversation. So, what do you think?Which of these people would you most like to meet in a bar, and which one the least?Have you learned anything from their wacky ideas, or are they too outside the box for you?

These are the five habits of highly likable people

These are the five habits of highly likable people These are the five habits of highly likable people It is the fear of most people at work: When you wiggle your way into a group at your office happy hour, the conversation immediately screeches to a halt. When you speak up in team meetings, your colleagues roll their eyes. You feel like you hear whispers every time you walk down the hallway. For whatever reason, you’re hated at work. And, even further, you’re convinced that it’s your no-good, backstabbing coworkers that are the problem. Why on earth wouldn’t they like you? You think you’re pretty great. How catty and childish (ahem, not to mention blind) are they?Brace yourself for a rude awakening: The issue here could very well be you. When you’re not well-liked in the office, it’s easy to point the finger at your coworkers. But, here’s the brutal reality: You play a large role in how you’re perceived in the office - meaning it’s not all the fault of your seemingly nasty and judgmental colleagues.“We all have blind spots about ourselves,” explains Kathi Elste r, President of K Squared Enterprises, co-author of Mean Girls at Work, and co-host of My Crazy Office Podcast.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!“When the behaviors are ‘built in’, it’s easy for us to see them as right. Habits slowly build from this repeated behavior,” adds Jeanne Patti, a  career coach.  â€œIf we ourselves don’t see the habits forming or those around us don’t call us out on them, these behaviors can become chronic and can negatively affect our character and how others view us.”What does all of this mean for you? Well, the way that you’re behaving in the office could be majorly turning your colleagues off - without you even realizing it. Here’s how to turn it around and become more likable - not with tricks, but with honest self-assessment.How to examine your own behavior for flaws So, what sorts of behaviors could you be exhibiting that are making your teammates cringe? Well, from constantly complaining to interrupting, your obnoxious actions could run the gamut.“The most toxic behaviors I see in the workplace involve individuals who think that the only way for them to get a win is for other people to lose,” explains Karlyn Borysenko, a principal of  Zen Workplace, about something she sees crop up frequently. “If they aren’t pushing other people down, they don’t think they can get ahead.”Office gossip is another terrible trap that’s easy to fall into. “As human beings, we like to understand why things are the way they are, and if we don’t have a clear explanation for it, we’ll come up with stories to explain it,” adds Borysenko. Here are some other things you could be doing that are contributing to your “least liked” status in the office.Maintaining control at all costs: Being the quintessential control freak might seem like a great wa y to take initiative and bring some much-needed organization to your team, but it’s sure to grate on your colleagues.“These people want to make all the decisions, double-check everything, and nitpick all the small details,” says Borysenko. Exhibiting this behavior might mean that you’ll even go so far as to provide direction to your peers - you act like the boss, even though you’re not.Taking credit for other’s work: This one’s a no-brainer, right? But, you’d be surprised by how easy it is to fall into this same trap yourself.Whether you provide a not-so-subtle reminder that the project was a team effort when your colleague is praised by your boss or you pass off an idea that your team member mentioned to you as your own, it can be tempting to ride on coattails or create your own spinoffs in order to shift the spotlight to yourself.Breeding negativity: When your team member wants to change the way you do a certain report, you complain. When the office manager switch es out the brand of coffee in the breakroom, you complain.“The pessimist can build a pretty strong case why the change can hurt the status quo,” says Patti. “When projects don’t meet their goals, these guardians prove themselves ‘right’, and the pessimistic behavior will build upon itself.”Having all the answers: Nobody likes a know-it-all. Not only is this behavior just plain obnoxious, but it can also lead to some pretty condescending treatment of your colleagues.“When this person becomes stressed or unable to contribute in a way they see as valuable to help fix the problem, they can quickly judge others and see them as incompetent,” Patti explains.Avoiding conflict: Are you somebody who prefers to duck and cover as soon as conflicts arise or conversations get a little more heated? You might think that playing Switzerland is a surefire way to stay out of the mess altogether. But, avoiding unpleasantness at all costs - and leaving your coworkers to duke it out, ev en when you have a dog in the fight yourself - is actually equally as frustrating. How to build self-awarenessHere’s the problem we all run into: Recognizing these behaviors in ourselves can be tough. After all, if you knew that something you were doing was royally pissing your coworkers off, you probably would’ve stopped doing that thing long ago, right?Needless to say, the first step to changing any behavior or habit is being able to identify it. So, in order to gain some more favor in the office (and stop those eye rolls that you’ve grown to dread), you’re going to need to become a little more self-aware. Here’s how.1. Take ownershipFirst up? Accepting the fact that you do indeed play a large role in the way that you’re perceived in the office. Sorry, it’s not all the fault of your seemingly judgmental colleagues.“If we acknowledge how our behaviors are being perceived by our coworkers, that means we need to place blame on ourselves, and most people simply don’t want to do that,” shares Borysenko. “It’s far easier to put ourselves in the role of a victim so that we don’t have to accept that we probably could have approached things differently.”2. Ask for feedbackRemember those blind spots you have about your own behavior? You might need to pull in some outside reinforcements to help you realize when you’re acting like, well, a jerk. “We all need to get direct feedback on what we are doing wrong,” explains Elster.Whether you want to have an honest (and likely to be brutally frank) conversation with a coworker that you trust or plan to bring up the way that you’re perceived in the office during a one-on-one with your supervisor, getting the insights - and help - of other people on your team can help to open your eyes to the way you’re acting.3. Pay attention to your stress reactions“On a good day, we can play nice with anyone,” shares Patti, “Yet, when we’re frustrated and under stress, our core traits come flyin g out.”“Most of us act out when we are stressed, which will contribute to bringing out our worst behaviors,” adds Elster. “We need to know what our stress reactions might be.”Pay close attention to how your attitude and behavior change when you’re placed in a high pressure situation. For example, do you become extra pushy and controlling when you’re working with a tight deadline?Anticipating that reaction will help you to more proactively manage it.4. Stop judgingWhen you realize that you’ve been acting like a straight-up jerk in the office, it’s human nature to start beating yourself up. But, resist the temptation to drag yourself over the coals.“Stop judging things as good or bad - your behaviors or other people’s,” warns Borysenko. “The minute we see something as ‘bad’ we try to fight against it, but that’s usually just not productive. Anytime you find yourself judging, take a step back, breathe, consider your goals, and look for the best way to b ring others along to achieve them.”5. Frequently step back and examine your own roleNo one sets out to behave in bad ways; we all try to work in ways that are comfortable for us. So, unless you’re a psychopath (they do well at work!) there’s a good chance that the behaviors that you assume to be harmless could be the very things that are pushing your coworkers away.Be aware of these common toxic behaviors and implement these tips to become more aware of your own actions, and you’re much more likely to tackle the important task of turning your reputation around.Remember that you often get back the reactions you put out there: if you’re doing a lot of eye-rolling yourself, you’re more likely to get eye-rolls from others in return. If you’re complaining a lot, people are complaining about you.Above all: Be authentic. Putting on an act to seem like a different person takes a lot of energy, won’t make you feel better and most of your colleagues are likely to see right thr ough it anyway. Most of the time, unless we’re Oscar-nominated actors, we’re not fooling anyone by pretending. Be sincere in your words and actions, and treat people with the respect they deserve.“You can be the smartest person in the room, but if no one likes you or no one wants to work with you, your reputation is going to be hurt,” concludes Elster. “Behavior matters.”This article was first published on May 18, 2017.You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

How to recharge at the airport while traveling solo

How to recharge at the airport while traveling solo How to recharge at the airport while traveling solo Whether it’s for work or vacation or to visit family during the holidays, most of us are going to find ourselves traveling alone at some point in our lives. If the idea sounds like a complete nightmare to you, you’re definitely not alone. Long lines, getting through security, and waiting through multiple delays at your gate is bad enough when you have a buddy to help get you through. Alone, it can become even more nerve-wracking. But traveling alone need not be such a nuisance. Ultimately, we have a choice: We can let the airport win and completely drain us of our life force, or we can adapt and change the typically trying experience into “me-time.” Below are a few tips on how to do just that.1. Consider more than the destination when you packIt’s easy to get so caught up in making sure we have what we need for the destination that we overlook what we need for the journey. So, when you’ve finished getting packed, take a moment to think of all the ways you get uncomfortable when you’re waiting for your plane. Personally, my knees get horribly achey, it always seems to be freezing, and I get hangry but don’t care to drop a ton of money on lunch. Fixes? A blow-up footrest, compact fleece blanket, some chamomile tea (hot water is usually free), and a homemade avocado and cucumber sandwich. It’s just enough stuff to keep me feeling cushy without me having to pack everything away as soon as I get set up.It’s also nice to include one item that doesn’t necessarily solve a problem but does make you happy. For me, it could be anything from a travel tube of the new hand cream I’m in love with to a trinket my late grandmother got me. If it puts me in a good mood and is easily stowed, into my bag it goes.2. Download a meditation appTaking a moment to recharge during the ‘hurry up and wait’ game can be a complete lifesaver. You don’t have to be a nervous flier to find airports really stressful - even after you’ve made your way through security. Whether or not you’re someone who meditates, taking a moment to recharge during the “hurry up and wait” game can be a complete lifesaver. If you’re new to the practice or think it might be too difficult to find your center in such a busy place, I couldn’t recommend a meditation app enough. There are some pretty amazing options out there that can easily help you relax and find your calm before you head off to board your flight.3. Take advantage of all that time with a leave-on maskI don’t know about you, but I’m a bit of a wild sleeper - so an overnight face mask is usually a no-go for me. Where it can make an appearance, however, is on a long trip. Before you go to try this yourself, I would suggest you follow a few simple rules. First, make sure you’ve cleaned your hands thoroughly. I don’t think I need to tell you just how gross an airport can be when it comes to bacteria, but you definitely don’t want to transfer any of it to your face. Next, wipe your face w ith a disposable facial cloth (or towel dampened with micellar water if you don’t do the disposable thing) to remove any impurities. Finally, pick a mask that absorbs into the skin and doesn’t require wiping off. You’re looking to relax, not give yourself a chore after you land. Now, when your flight’s all finished, you can step off the plane looking nice and dewy instead of dry and drained. (Just don’t forget to stay hydrated!)4. Pick up a hobby or skillIt might not seem like it at first, but an airport is actually a pretty good place to teach yourself something. You’re in a situation where you’re mostly just sitting and waiting, and there’s not going to be much around to distract you - especially during the journey itself. As for what to learn, it’s entirely up to you. There are tons of apps and videos out there that will teach you something for free, so you shouldn’t have any trouble at all finding a subject that interests you. And don’t feel like you have t o limit yourself to just the digital! Just make sure to choose something feasible. So long as it doesn’t require a ton of equipment, the sky’s the limit. (Fun fact: I actually taught myself to knit while waiting for my best friend to give birth.)5. Do some personal housekeepingWhether it’s organizing your photos or coming up with a 5-year plan, we all have those projects we can never quite find the time to get around to. Just like with learning something new, waiting around at the airport might be the perfect time to buckle down and do it. Even if you know there’s no way you’re going to be able to finish, it’ll still be well worth a shot. Especially with longer projects, getting started can be the hardest part. So, no matter where you are in the process, there’s a very good chance you’re going to feel much lighter than if you hadn’t started chipping away at it at all.Originally from Illinois, Sarah Militello is a Los Angeles-based freelance writer and founder of wo men’s lifestyle and travel website Milk Flowers. This article was originally posted on Shondaland.com.

Stop chasing opportunities

Stop chasing opportunities Stop chasing opportunities Do you believe that more opportunities equal more chances of success? I sure did.And since we all want to feel important in this world, we think that the way to achieve that is to chase every single opportunity out there.I hear it often: “This is a big opportunity for me.”But that idea is broken. Chasing opportunities is a bad strategy. It’s more practical to chase skills and PREPARE for opportunities.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! That’s a small tweak in your mindset, but it changes everything. Abraham Lincoln put it best:“I will prepare and some day my chance will  come.”We’re always desperately looking for the next big opportunity. The next big business idea, technology to adopt, a holiday to plan, house to buy, person to seduce, promotion to acquire. What are you pursuing in your  life? Are you all over the place?  Trying to make the best of everything? Cha sing every single opportunity on your path? If you do that, this is you:You’re just fooling yourself. You want it all, but you lack the courage to say no. So you say yes, and you put yourself in an impossible situation. Many priorities equal NO  focusI must be honest - I’m talking to myself here. For most of my life, I’ve been moving from one opportunity to the other. That changed about two years ago when I decided to only focus on growing Vartex, my family business, and my blog. And that went well. I said no to everything else. But I was tempted by opportunities the last few months. Consulting, coaching, speaking, writing more books, starting other businesses, creating YouTube videos - things I either did or considered. But all it did was confuse me. I had too many priorities and zero focus. It was time for me to rethink my opportunities. However, it’s never a matter of finding opportunities. Everyone has opportunities. So it’s not about how many opportunities you have, itâ €™s about how many opportunities you eliminate from your life. And that’s not easy.I decided to only focus on my business, blog, online courses, and podcasting. Just four things. They’re all very closely related. And I say no to every other opportunity.Opportunities are not only  externalMost opportunities come from within. Every time you think: “Should I pursue this?” You’re evaluating an opportunity. And that requires a lot of brainpower. So make your life easy, and DECIDE.Decide what you want to focus on in your career. What do you want to excel at? And do exactly that. Nothing else.“How many things should I focus  on?”That’s a tough one. It depends on where you are in life. In the beginning of your career, I would pick one to make things easy. Just pick one skill and give it all your attention. But having just one skill in life will not get you far. When I look at people who are doing well in life, they often have combined several skills to get a competitive advanta ge.You also don’t want to be a jack of all trades. Otherwise, you’re okay at many things, but never exceptional at a few.“How do I know when opportunity knocks?”When you know that it requires hard work to actualize the opportunity. Thomas Edison put it nicely:“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like  work.”At the end of the day, an opportunity is just a chance of making something good happen. An opportunity alone means nothing. Give ten people the same opportunity, and you’ll get ten different outcomes.Opportunity = More Work (which is not always a good thing)Because you don’t want to work yourself to death, it’s best to pick your opportunities wisely. How? I ask myself two questions. What am I good at?  This question helps you pick opportunities that align with your strengths What type of work do I enjoy?  I don’t like to pursue opportunities just because I think it will make me money. Or just because other people are doing something. Those are lousy reasons to do something. And when you answer those questions honestly, you always get a handful of career opportunities. No one is good at 107 skills. And no one enjoys doing everything in the world.Remember that drawing from earlier? You’re chasing all opportunities, but you end up confused. Now, when you decide to pursue a few good opportunities that knock on your door, you get this:Look, life is full of opportunity. You just have to figure out which opportunities you’re going after. And yes, that’s a hard thing to figure out. You also don’t control the opportunities that come your way. What do you control? How prepared you are. So stop chasing everything like a happy dog in the park on a summer day. Just keep things simple, work on your skills, character, and become better at a few things every single day.And when opportunity knocks, don’t be afraid of the work, grab it by the head and give it EVERYTHING YOU GOT.This article first appeared on Darius Foroux.  You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Find Your Calling

How to Find Your Calling How to Find Your Calling Theres a difference between a career and a calling. A lucky few have aligned them with one another. When we are  young, we have dreams and ambitions for  our lives. However, we rarely get to follow this path to fruition. Practical concerns almost always get in the way, and we end up pigeonholed in careers entirely different  from what we expected. Part of the problem is many of us dont actually know what our calling is. We dont know what the perfect job would look like or what its title would be. How do you put your ambitions into words on a job application when you cant even explain them to yourself? The Million-Dollar Question One way of determining  what you really want to be doing with your time is to imagine you have won a million dollars (or as much money as you would need to free yourself from your current commitments). Ask yourself: After you have paid off mortgages and debts, enjoyed some luxury or travel, and ensured your family was  taken care of, what would you turn to next? How would you choose to spend  your time and energy for the next 10, 20, or 30 years? Would you want to open your own business? Would you campaign for a cause thats close to your heart? Would you write a book, become a ski instructor, tap into your creative talents? Whatever comes to mind will give you a good idea of where your passion lies. Write it down. What Makes You Flow? Another way to establish where your calling might be is to think about the activities you flow in. Flowing is when you are doing something so meaningful that it doesnt even feel like work. You are focused, galvanized, and productive. Thoughts and anxieties dissipate as you become absorbed in the task, operating in an optimum state of consciousness. You may perform your flow activity almost intuitively. It could be when you are solving a problem, coordinating resources, selling a product, or creating something new. See if you can identify the activities that make you flow, and then write them down. You may not even realize what activities you flow in until you are next performing them! (For me, its when Im cooking. I dont work from a recipe, easily lose track of time, and am extremely content pottering around the kitchen!) Determine Your Fundamental Impulses Now that you have an inkling as to where your calling lies, drill  down to the fundamental drivers behind it all.  Look at your lists of passions and flow activities and ask yourself why these things appeal to you. For example, why would you want to start your own business after winning the lottery? Is it because you thrive on total ownership? Is it because you have a brilliant idea you want to market to others? Is it because youd be happier making meaningful decisions? Work it out and write it down. As a case study, lets look at why I flow when cooking. Its not because I like to eat or save money by making meals from scratch. Its actually because I enjoy thinking of a new idea and translating it into a tangible result. Cooking is my catalyst for turning concepts  into constructions. Writing also gives me the same gratification. Find the deeper meaning behind what makes you happy and take note of it. Repeat this process for all of your flow activities and lottery endeavors until you have a list of four or five fundamental characteristics of your calling. Think about  how many of these characteristics  you experience in your current role. Is it enough to make you content? Is it possible you could find something else that fulfills more â€" or even all â€" of your criterion? Now that you know what your primary desires are, research  opportunities that would allow you to realize them â€"  and to get paid while doing so.  Speak to people in appealing roles and check that your perceptions are correct. Assess job specs with a clearer knowledge of your core drivers. Is there a different team in your company that would cater to your needs? Devise a plan to navigate toward it. There may even be ways your current role can be adapted to encompass more of what compels you. Or perhaps with the new year comes the time for career conversion. Have faith, take the leap, and live your calling. Lauren Lindsay is a recruiter, blogger, and millennial with a marketing degree from the triple-accredited Strathclyde Business School. How to Write a Creative Brief for Advertising Projects

How to Write a Creative Brief for Advertising Projects How to Write a Creative Brief for Advertising Projects The creative brief is the foundation of any advertising or marketing campaign. Its the treasure map that creatives follow  that tells them where to start digging for those golden ideas- or at least it should if its any good. A good creative brief can be hard to come by. A combination of lack of preparation, increasingly tighter deadlines, bad habits, laziness, poor account management, bad creative direction, and ineffective training  all contribute to this document becoming something of a necessary evil. But done right, everyone benefits. Start by Grilling the Client A creative brief is an account teams interpretation of the clients wishes. It is the job of a good account manager or planner to extract everything they possibly can from the client.  This is the time to find out as much as possible about the product or service. What are its strengths and weaknesses? How was it brainstormed? Who benefits from it? What stories can the client tell you? What problems are they facing? Sit down, in person if you can, and ask every conceivable question. What, why, when, how much? Squeeze every last drop of information from the client. Youll need it. Use the Product or Service This is crucial. If its at all possible, get samples of the product youre selling. If its a service, test it out. If its a car, drive it. If its fast food, eat it. Experience everything, and do it as a consumer, not an advertiser. The more you know, the better your brief will be. You can explain the strengths. You can turn weaknesses into selling points. Youll have a personal perspective. Great advertising, like the original VW campaign, is based on the product. It focuses on it. Soak it all up before you write. Write All Thoughts Down Write about the first thoughts you had after talking to the client or using the product. Jot down the goal of the client, the budget, the timeline, the obstacles, and everything else that you have collected. Spew it all out, because youll be using this to make a great brief. By putting everything down, you will start to see links between seemingly random thoughts, and potential strategies can begin to emerge.   Organize Your Thoughts Now that you have the raw material, its time to start organizing it into something useful. Every creative brief is different, but they share similar traits. Here are the most common sections of a creative brief: BackgroundTarget audienceObjectivesTone of voiceSingle-Minded Proposition (Also called USP, Key Message, Direction)Key benefitsReasons to believeAudience takeawayDeliverables (Outdoor, Print, TV, etc.)BudgetSchedule Where to Spend the Most Time Writing This section has many names: key takeaway, main insight, Unique Selling Point. Whatever you call it, focus all of your energy on it. The rest of the information is just information. The Single-Minded Proposition (SMP) is the driving force behind the campaign. Its the arrow that points your creative team in the right direction. You need to boil down everything you have collected, talk to the creative director, other account people in your team, and get to the essence of the project. How would you sum it up in one succinct sentence? Do you know which creative team will be working on the job? If so, talk to them. Theyll have insights which will help you craft a great proposition. Here are some examples of great SMPs: Theres More To Iceland Than Anyone Ever Knew - Iceland Supermarket (HHCL/Red Cell)To Our Members, Were The Fourth Emergency Service - The Automobile Association (HHCLPartners)Dont Let Your Illness Cripple Your Family - Abbey Life Insurance (written by John Hiney at Payne Stracey)Were Number Two. We Try Harder - Avis (DDB) Edit and Simplify Now that you have a powerful SMP and all the information is down on paper, its time to get your red pen out and slash some ink. Your job here is not to impress people with how much research and data youve collected. Your creative brief should be just that- creatively written and concise. Cut it to the bone. Get rid of anything unnecessary. Youre aiming for one page. Theres rarely any need to go beyond that. All of that research you did- the product background and competitive ads- they are all support documents. They play no part in your creative brief. Think of the brief as a rousing speech to stir up the troops and get them motivated.   Creative Director Feedback A good creative director will insist on seeing every brief that comes through the department. After all, its his or her job to oversee the creative work, and the brief is a huge part of that process. Dont just do a drive-by or email it. Actually, sit down and go through it with the creative director. Doing so will give you the opportunity to take feedback, ask questions, and get direction. You will rarely hit it out of the park on your first try so  youll likely be repeating steps five, six, and seven at least once more. Get the Clients Approval This is important. At this point, showing the client is paramount, because you need their approval on the agencys direction for the campaign. Not the on the creative itself, but on the direction the project will go. This is key. If, when the time comes to present the work, the client says I dont like it, thats not what we wanted then you can go back to the creative brief and say actually, it is. The creative brief was signed by the client  which shows  they agreed to it. If  they need different work, they need a new creative brief and, more importantly, you get more time. This also makes the work youve already done billable, not just wasted time and energy. Presenting Your Brief When you have a concise, creative brief that has approval from all parties, its time to brief the creative team. Do it in person or via phone/video conference if a live meeting isnt possible. Dont get lazy and send an email or worse, leave a photocopy on the desk with any questions, gimme a call scrawled on it.  This is your opportunity to start the project right. An in-person briefing also gives the creatives a chance to ask questions, clear up any possible gray areas, and feel you out on other issues that may come up. If you want to get the best work, in a timely fashion, be there in person to brief the teams.   Follow these steps and you should be well on your way to writing a brief that gets results, not just creatively, but also financially.

How to Stay in Touch With Recruiters

How to Stay in Touch With Recruiters How to Stay in Touch With Recruiters Many jobseekers feel uneasy about keeping in touch with recruiters, feeling as if they are being a pest. As a former executive recruiter, I appreciated candidates who kept in touch in an unassuming way i.e., they let me know the latest news about them and their market, but didnt always have a request or need. Here is what other recruiters from a variety of industries advise about how jobseekers can stay in touch:Build the relationship before you need anythingXavier Roux is a Partner at Redseeds Consulting, recruiters for the management consulting industry: Strong candidates cultivate good relationships with recruiters when they are NOT looking for a job so that they can get help when they are.Dont be afraid to follow up about a specific position that interests youAndrew Hendrickson is Managing Partner Principal Consultant with OPHR Group, recruiters for technology and new media: If you are very qualified you should feel comfortable making 1-2 cold or follow-up calls no matter wha t stage you are in the process, but keep in mind too many will result in your being disqualified. [Send] a follow-up action plan once you understand a hiring manager's expectations. This works especially well for people in sales and marketing or any job that requires results. If you are considered a top prospect sending a high-level yet well thought out 90 day action plan can put you above your competition.Contacting via social media is okay, when you have done research and come preparedJennifer Sobel is a Recruitment Manager at Disney ABC Television Group: Many job seekers are desperately trying to use social networking tools to search for jobs, which is a great idea. However, they are using the tools all wrong. I must get 10-15 LinkedIn requests per day from people searching for a job at my company. Their requests usually sound something like this Hi, I dont know you but would love to work at Disney ABC Television Group. Are there any openings for me? I would urge each job see ker to only reach out when they have identified an open position that they meet the minimum qualifications for.Not having your research done beforehand comes off as lazy and it doesnt give a recruiter any reason to help you.Being helpful is a two-way exchangeSarah Grayson is a Founding Partner of On-Ramps, recruiters for the social sector: It's always impressive to me when candidates refer us other strong candidates and go out of their way to stay in touch It shows me that they know how to network and value relationships. This surprising toy can help you problem solve at work

This surprising toy can help you problem solve at work This surprising toy can help you problem solve at work Some days, it seems like personal challenges and work obstacles just keep piling up, leaving even the  most motivated person  feeling uninspired or stuck. Are you in need of a new tactic to ease your frustrations or find a solution to a tough problem? Author and professor  Dr. Loretta Breuning, PhD, tells us that she swears by something that may sound a little strange at first: Keeping a rubber ducky on her desk, and talking to it when she feels annoyed, afraid, or unsure what to do.Telling stuff to a plastic toy might not make sense at first, but according to Dr. Bruening, the verbal brain - or the words you think, say, and use - is part of your overall thought process. “The world floods your senses with detail, and you make sense of it by fitting it into the neural pathways you have,” she explains. “You aren’t born with neural pathways; they build from experience. We’re all unique! Even more, you don’t consciously fit reality into your old pathways; the electricity in your brain flows like water in a storm, finding the paths of least resistance. This is why your conscious mind can make it hard to untangle your thoughts.”Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Even more, Dr. Bruening suggests that talking to a rubber ducky aloud can help you uncover new solutions when you feel stuck. Unlike when talking with a real person, you don’t have to worry about overexplaining, losing your thoughts to interruptions, or rationalizing your problem. “I learned this method from software engineers, who use it for tough debugging problems. It works because when you talk to the rubber ducky on your desk, you have to connect words to your thought patterns. This forces different regions in your brain to work together, and you’ll be able to come up with new ‘templates’ instead of relying on your old ones.” Once you master the rubber ducky exercise and learn how to think and take action in ways you haven’t before, you’ll be in great shape to power past problems that tripped you up before (and maybe eventually not even need the duck itself). Here are three scenarios to try it out. 1. Tackle a technical problem.  Dr. Bruening admits that technical problems stress her out, sharing that she feels like she’s “about to explode” when she can’t complete simple, routine tasks that are usually easy to check off her list. “I can’t stand it when I’ve tried everything and wasted a lot of time. My husband usually hears my groans and tries to help, but he knows nothing about the tools I use, and I end up feeling desperate as I try to explain. I’ve learned that, seemingly miraculously, as soon as I tell him the problem, I see my mistake and know how to fix it. I couldn’t understand how this happens until I heard about the rubber ducky debugging method. Now that I’ve learned it and understand, I ask my husband to act like my rubber ducky. Sometimes I serve as his rubber ducky too.” 2. Work out your feelings.  Did you recently suffer a breakup? Or maybe you’re having a tough time with a friend, or feeling frustrated after a meeting that didn’t go as you hoped. “We all know how painful some situations can be,” Dr. Bruening acknowledges. “In these instances, you might feel tempted to call friends and tell them the story. But this can go wrong, because your friends might either agree with you to seem supportive or see the problem incorrectly through the lens of their own life experiences. When this happens, you might feel more stressed and have an even more complex problem to deal with.” Talking to your rubber ducky instead, Dr. Bruening promises, can help you see the right solution on your own. “You won’t feel obligated to honor anyone’s opinion that you’ve asked for if you disagree or to manage frustrating feelings if someone doesn’t understand. Instead, you can zero in on what brings you peace.” 3. Make an important decision.  â€œImagine that you have to make a difficult decision at work or at home - you feel stuck, so you ask a few people for opinions,” offers Dr. Bruening. “But what can you do if their opinions seem off-base or misguided to you? I used to end up with a let-down feeling, until I realized that I was disappointed with other insights because I already believed in my own insights. The reality is that other people never know the problem as well as you do because they don’t have all the facts.” Nowadays, Dr. Bruening tells us she talks to her rubber ducky instead, because it helps her establish new neural pathways. “Old pathways motivate us to seek support from others, but we don’t always like their input when we get it.” Use yours to hear your own voice loud and clear - it’s often the best one to help you make a decision anyway.
